Pink Lane

With Mawson Kerr for NE1

Commissioned by NE1 and designed by MawsonKerr, Pink Lane Gateway is a suspended public art installation spanning two zones of Newcastle's historic Pink Lane, marking the entrance to one of the city's most characterful streets. We were responsible for the fabrication and installation of the project, translating the architectural concept into a robust, permanent intervention within the public realm.

The installation comprises multiple runs of IFR-rated fabric sleeves, each housing continuous LED lighting elements and suspended between building façades at height. During the day, the pink and orange fabric catches the light against the Victorian brickwork, drawing the eye upward and activating the pedestrian route. After dark, the illuminated sleeves transform the lane, casting a warm, saturated glow across the cobbled streets below.

Each installation zone was engineered to respond to its specific structural context, requiring bespoke fixing solutions and careful coordination with the surrounding historic buildings. Working within a constrained urban environment, the project demanded detailed planning, precision fabrication and a carefully sequenced installation to minimise disruption while ensuring the long-term performance of the suspended system.
